Gunman Kills Four in Manhattan Office Tower Attack

A deadly shooting at a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday evening claimed four lives, including an off-duty NYPD officer who died attempting to stop the gunman, authorities said.

The attack unfolded around 6:30 p.m. when 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas arrived outside 345 Park Avenue carrying an M4-style assault rifle and wearing body armor. Security footage captured him exiting a black BMW before entering the building's lobby and opening fire.

Hero Officer Killed

Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was working a private security assignment when he became the gunman's first target. The three-and-a-half-year NYPD veteran and father of two was fatally shot while responding to the attack. His wife is expecting their third child.

"He was a true hero who gave his life protecting others," Mayor Eric Adams said. "We mourn alongside his family, his colleagues, and every New Yorker who values courage and sacrifice."

Deadly Rampage

After killing Islam, Tamura took an elevator to the 33rd floor where he continued firing, killing three more people and critically wounding another before turning the gun on himself. One victim worked for the National Football League, whose headquarters occupy space in the 44-story building that also houses Blackstone and other major firms.

Shooter's Background

Law enforcement sources confirmed Tamura had documented mental health issues but no significant criminal record. He drove cross-country from Nevada, making several stops before reaching New York Monday. A note found in his car referenced the NFL and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), though police stressed no clear motive has been established.

Swift Response

The NYPD, FBI, and FDNY responded within minutes, evacuating the building and securing the area. "The shooter acted alone. There is no ongoing threat to the public," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Mayor Adams announced the city will review security protocols for major office buildings following the tragedy. The investigation continues as authorities piece together Tamura's timeline and weapon acquisition.
